***  From Peter Swartz at CNA:

From the Marine Corps Gazette (but slightly edited):

A new annual essay contest supported by the Marine Corps Association and Foundation and named for LtCol Earl “Pete” Ellis invites articles that focus on preparing the Marine Corps for future conflict through a wide array of perspectives ranging from doctrine, emerging threats, capabilities, technological advances, and operational concepts. The contest is named for the amphibious visionary, LtCol Earl “Pete” Hancock Ellis, who was the brilliant planner who foretold the struggle for the Pacific 20 years before World War II. His ability to assess the uncertain security environment and its impact on U.S. economic and national security spawned the development of a series of concepts, doctrine and, eventually, a hallmark capability for Navy-Marine Corps amphibious operations. This essay contest is established in keeping with LtCol Ellis’ visionary approach to expeditionary warfare.

The purpose of this contest is to stimulate strategic thinking. It is open to anyone, civilian or military, who is interested in expanding the dialogue with creative ideas and solutions as to how a fiscally constrained Navy-Marine Team can effectively execute the full range of naval amphibious operations in the future threat environment.

To qualify, entries must propose and argue for modification or introduction of new concepts or materiel solutions to address future operational challenges. Authors must provide qualitative reinforcement to compel further exploration of the topic. The inaugural theme for 2012 is an operational focus on the role of the Navy-Marine Team as a crisis response force in the uncertain security environment of 2015–24. Articles should address topics ranging from new operational concepts, force composition, and materiel solutions that broaden our littoral maneuver and amphibious operations capabilities.

Manuscripts should be typewritten, double spaced, and range in length from 2,000 to 3,000 words. The text should be in Microsoft Word format (include disk when submitting by mail) and include a cover page with the title of the essay, author’s name and mailing address, and identification of the essay as a Pete Ellis contest entry. The author’s name should not appear anywhere but on the cover page. The title should be repeated on the first page of the essay. Entries should be submitted before 30 June to the Editor, Marine Corps Gazette. E-mail entries are acceptable and preferred with the article appended as a Microsoft Word document and should be e-mailed to gazette@mca-marines.org. Members of the Amphibious Capabilities Working Group will judge the contest in July and notify all entrants as to the outcome shortly thereafter. Prizes include $5,000 and an engraved plaque for first place and an engraved plaque for second place and honorable mention. All entries are eligible for publication. The winning entries will be published in the Marine Corps Gazette.

***  National Parks Make Great Family Getaways

By Lisa Daniel

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 16, 2012 – Ask people what their all-time favorite family vacation has been and chances are good national parks will be in most of the answers. I don’t have any science to back that up, but I have been struck by the number of people who recollect their best memories of family bonding in places like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon.

Somehow, even traveling for hours in a cramped car with cranky kids seems to vanish from the memories of those who have experienced America’s most magnificent places. From the peaks of Alaska’s Denali to the lowlands of Florida’s Everglades, the National Park Service’s 397 national parks and many thousands of historical and archaeological sites and wetlands were each brought into the federal system because they are the best of the best – those places deemed worthy of protecting for everyone to see.

That’s exactly what Interior Secretary Ken Salazar had in mind when he announced yesterday that the $80 annual pass for all the national parks and public lands will be waived for active-duty military members and their dependents, starting May 19, Armed Forces Day.

Salazar said he hopes military members and their families will visit the parks and public lands for fun, rest and relaxation, family bonding, and to experience those places America holds dear. As the Interior secretary said, these are “the very places they not only defend, but that they own.”

The World War II generation had a close connection to the parks, National Park Service Director John Jarvis said, because some military training was done there – such as when the 10th Mountain Division trained on Mount Ranier in Washington – and some places were reserved for a time only for returning service members and their families. Also, the federal government then made a push to improve the parks and add infrastructure for the returning warriors.

“If you talk to folks of that generation, they came back, had kids, got in the station wagon, and did the national park tours,” Jarvis said.

Officials hope today’s generation of troops and families make the same connections. And with national parks – 84 million acres of land and 4.5 million acres of oceans, lakes and reservoirs — in every state except Delaware, many are just a day trip, or less, away.

So, why wait? Play hooky on your Saturday chores, let the kids miss soccer practice, pry the electronics out of their hands, and hop in the SUV. Those mountain trails, battlefields, nature preserves and historic homes are just around the corner.

Please see more information on the event below.

The following is taken from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Web site:

The Memorial Day 2012 ceremonies at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will begin the national commemoration of the Vietnam War’s 50th anniversary.

The Department of Defense’s Office of Commemorations is working with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and National Parks Service for a special and inspiring ceremony to thank and honor America’s Vietnam veterans for their service, valor and sacrifice.

Details on the Memorial Day event follow,  and those planning to attend are asked to make plans early, as access to The Wall and seating will be limited due to security preparations.

National Ceremony in Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War

DATE: Monday, May 28, 2012

START TIME: 1:00 pm

LOCATION: Vietnam Veterans Memorial – Enter on Constitution Avenue

CLOSING: 3:30 pm

Unlike previous years, formal invitations are being sent by the Secretary of Defense to more than 2,000 Vietnam Veterans, Gold Star family members, wounded veterans, military and other local hospitals, as well as Congressional Vietnam veterans and distinguished guests.

Veteran Service Organizations that have an association with the Vietnam War, each branch of the Military Service, as well as the Office of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and other governmental leaders have been asked to provide lists of Veterans to be invited.

It will be impossible to accommodate everyone who wishes to be present at the Memorial for the Memorial Day ceremony, but we are making arrangements to provide an additional viewing area on the knoll just to the East of the Wall, and within line of sight of the event.  In addition, attendees will be able to see the events unfold on large video screens at the site.

Security will be very restrictive. All  attendees, in either viewing area, will be required to pass through magnetometers. There will be additional restrictions on items that can be carried into the viewing areas. Bottled water or food, knives, weapons of any type, sharp metal objects, such as nail files, etc. will not be allowed past the security screening points.

Attendees will need to have a photo ID to pass through security.

Invited dignitaries include the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of Joint Chiefs, the Joint Chiefs, Senator Chuck Hagel (a Vietnam veteran) as well as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Secretary of the Interior and other cabinet officials.  Award winning actor and Vietnam era Army veteran, Tom Selleck, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. He will be joined by the Marine Corps Band and the Army Chorus. Other VIP guests include Medal of Honor recipients, General Barry R. McCaffrey, Jan Scruggs of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund and others who are or have relatives who are Vietnam veterans.

Veteran Service Organizations, Gold Star family members and military leaders will lay wreaths during the ceremony..  Taps and a moment of silence will follow the wreath laying. A fly-over by military aircraft will culminate this tribute to America’s Vietnam veterans and begin a series of nationwide commemorations.

The objective of this special ceremony in simple:

TO THANK AND HONOR THE SERVICE, VALOR AND SACRIFICE OF VIETNAM VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
