A message from the city of Boston

We are excited to be welcoming the ships of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemorations for the July 4th week. The international tall ships, active Navy ships, and ships of America’s coalition partners will be on display in Boston and will serve as the centerpiece for the commemoration festivities. The tall ships remind us of the vital role that our own USS Constitution played in The War of 1812, which was the last war fought under sail. We are truly looking forward to a successful event in partnership with Operation Sail and the US Navy for this historic milestone.

***  Vietnam War Surface Action Exhibit to Debut at Navy Museum on 23 June

DEFCON 1 subscribers in the Washington, DC area are invited to join Naval Historical Foundation members at the ribbon-cutting for the Navy Museum’s newest exhibit, “Into the Lion’s Den!”  that tells the story of the August 1972 night time surface action in Haiphong Harbor.  This event will occur at 11:30 am on Saturday, 23 June. The display features a replica of the armored bridge of heavy cruiser Newport News which led cruiser Providence and destroyers Robison and Rowan into Haiphong for a short but intensive bombardment of harbor facilities, and then dealt with the excitement of a North Vietnamese PT boat attack.  Museum visitors will hear actual sound-powered phone reports recorded during that action as part of the well-scripted story of the raid and will see, hear and feel the effects of the Newport News  8-inch and 5-inch gunfire as they stand in the red-lit bridge behind the officer of the deck, phone talker, helmsman and lee helmsman decked out in combat dress.  The Seventh Fleet Commander at the time, retired CNO Admiral James L. Holloway III, was embarked in Newport News during the raid and will be on hand to provide remarks.    This completion of this exhibit, honoring surface warriors who fought on the Tonkin Gulf gun line, has been timed to follow DoD’s Memorial Day kickoff of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War.  Refreshments will precede the ribbon-cutting that will occur in the Building 70 Cold War Gallery annex to the National Museum of the United States Navy at the Washington Navy Yard.  To ensure we have everyone on the Navy Yard access list and have plenty of food for all guests, please RSVP to attend the event at http://www.navyhistory.org/event/nhf-annual-meeting-2012/ .

***  Vietnam War Surface Action Exhibit to Debut at Navy Museum on 23 June DEFCON 1 subscribers in the Washington, DC area are invited to join Naval Historical Foundation members at the ribbon-cutting for the Navy Museum’s newest exhibit, “Into the Lion’s Den!”  that tells the story of the August 1972 night time surface action in Haiphong Harbor.

Holloway III, was embarked in Newport News during the raid and will be

on hand to provide remarks.    This completion of this exhibit, honoring

surface warriors who fought on the Tonkin Gulf gun line, has been timed to follow DoD’s Memorial Day kickoff of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War.

This Is How the Navy Is Building Their New Nuclear Supercarrier Class.

http://gizmodo.com/5911974/this-is-how-the-navy-is-building-their-new-nuclear-supercarrier-class

***  From Peter Swartz at CNA:

From the Marine Corps Gazette (but slightly edited):

A new annual essay contest supported by the Marine Corps Association and Foundation and named for LtCol Earl “Pete” Ellis invites articles that focus on preparing the Marine Corps for future conflict through a wide array of perspectives ranging from doctrine, emerging threats, capabilities, technological advances, and operational concepts. The contest is named for the amphibious visionary, LtCol Earl “Pete” Hancock Ellis, who was the brilliant planner who foretold the struggle for the Pacific 20 years before World War II. His ability to assess the uncertain security environment and its impact on U.S. economic and national security spawned the development of a series of concepts, doctrine and, eventually, a hallmark capability for Navy-Marine Corps amphibious operations. This essay contest is established in keeping with LtCol Ellis’ visionary approach to expeditionary warfare.

The purpose of this contest is to stimulate strategic thinking. It is open to anyone, civilian or military, who is interested in expanding the dialogue with creative ideas and solutions as to how a fiscally constrained Navy-Marine Team can effectively execute the full range of naval amphibious operations in the future threat environment.

To qualify, entries must propose and argue for modification or introduction of new concepts or materiel solutions to address future operational challenges. Authors must provide qualitative reinforcement to compel further exploration of the topic. The inaugural theme for 2012 is an operational focus on the role of the Navy-Marine Team as a crisis response force in the uncertain security environment of 2015–24. Articles should address topics ranging from new operational concepts, force composition, and materiel solutions that broaden our littoral maneuver and amphibious operations capabilities.

Manuscripts should be typewritten, double spaced, and range in length from 2,000 to 3,000 words. The text should be in Microsoft Word format (include disk when submitting by mail) and include a cover page with the title of the essay, author’s name and mailing address, and identification of the essay as a Pete Ellis contest entry. The author’s name should not appear anywhere but on the cover page. The title should be repeated on the first page of the essay. Entries should be submitted before 30 June to the Editor, Marine Corps Gazette. E-mail entries are acceptable and preferred with the article appended as a Microsoft Word document and should be e-mailed to gazette@mca-marines.org. Members of the Amphibious Capabilities Working Group will judge the contest in July and notify all entrants as to the outcome shortly thereafter. Prizes include $5,000 and an engraved plaque for first place and an engraved plaque for second place and honorable mention. All entries are eligible for publication. The winning entries will be published in the Marine Corps Gazette.
