In honor of this past Sunday being “World Bear Day” (a symbol of strength and wisdom): When the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Honolulu (SSN 718) surfaced 280 miles from the North Pole on this date in 2003, this trio of curious polar bears spent two hours investigating the boat. Very interesting… The U.S. will build a 6th-gen fighter jet. American aerospace titan Boeing will receive a contract to develop and build the centerpiece of the Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance program, President Donald Trump announced at the White House on Friday. The aircraft is envisioned as the centerpiece of a family of systems, with new drones called Collaborative Combat Aircraft in development to fly alongside the jet. It’s intended as a successor to the F-22 Raptor, but with longer range and more advanced stealth. And according to current plans, it’s expected to be cheaper than the Raptor and produced in greater quantities, Defense One’s Audrey Decker reports. The aircraft will be called the F-47, which Air Force chief Gen. David Allvin said, “honors the legacy of the P-47, whose contributions to air superiority during WWII remain historic.” The numbering also “pays tribute to the founding year of our incredible @usairforce, while also recognizing the 47th @POTUS’s pivotal support for the development of the world’s FIRST sixth-generation fighter,” Allvin wrote on social media Friday evening. Boeing beat out Lockheed Martin, its only rival for the contract, after Northrop Grumman dropped out last year. Lockheed, which designed the U.S. military’s two fifth-gen fighter jets, now has no piece of either the Air Force or Navy’s 6th-gen efforts. Rewind: The NGAD development contract was originally supposed to be awarded in 2024, but the service paused the program after soaring cost projections said each jet would cost as much as three F-35s. The Air Force plans to spend $20 billion over the next five years to develop the program, according to its 2025 budget request, and Boeing is poised to reap production orders worth hundreds of billions more. Current forecast: “The F-47 will fly during President Trump’s administration,” Allvin predicted. “European capitals are reviewing vulnerabilities and want to wean themselves from dependence on American weapons, but expanding homegrown options will take time,” the Washington Post wrote Sunday. Lockheed is already sweetening its F-35 offer to Canada, trying to keep Ottawa from changing its plans to buy more jets, Canada’s Globe and Mail reported Thursday. If you want a broader look at the F-35 market, here.
Thinking about AI… Geoff Livingston
Within a 24-hour period, I read several critics who wrote off AI announcements and content as slop. It’s easy to understand how people would view over-the-top hype and poorly or uncurated AI-created content as proof points. But to write off all AI uses as slop – regardless of the field of execution – is short-sighted at best and, in the most dramatic cases, career-ending. Certainly, every profession and field is now experiencing poorly executed AI. This is the by-product of a technology boom filled with hype and unasked-for use cases, from bad products to crap content. However, for every poor execution, there are most certainly several good ones. While these use cases are good enough to create efficiencies with time spent, improved accuracy, and quality, all while generating cost savings and ROI. The results are so impactful for some companies and even in some sectors that companies are now reducing their workforce, particularly those that perform rote and repeatable tasks. For example, Bloomberg just reported that Wall Street banks are expected to cut at least 200,000 back office and middle management jobs over the next five years. Between productivity increases and cuts, AI is expected to add $180 billion to banks’ combined bottom line. The same article noted that AI was expected to impact more than those who lost positions, but also those who remain. They will become managers of processes whose work is augmented and supported by AI. While JP Morgan noted that jobs will not be displaced, rather they will be augmented, CEO Jamie Dimon paints a utopian image of better lives with 2 ½ day work weeks…First, we must begin by understanding that there are both very good and bad AI use cases. Here are just a few of the nice ones:
- Personalized outreach campaigns that better understand context
- Automated customer service from records of hundreds of thousands of past cases
- Meeting notes and summarization
- Better editing with generative-AI-enabled tools like Grammarly Pro
- AI-generated stock creative developed by the buyer
There are millions of successful AI use cases now. The “AI is slop” argument ultimately reflects a failure to engage with the technology’s nuances…For example, my biggest criticism is not with AI technology itself but with companies like OpenAI that present their algorithms as cure-all solutions while failing to grasp their practical applications…While I remain skeptical of OpenAI’s approach, I regularly use AI tools like Anthropic’s Claude, Adobe Firefly, and Midjourney in my daily work. The result? I’ve gained back roughly two hours each day – time now spent on strategic thinking rather than routine tasks. In conclusion, we should not debate the wholesale adoption or rejection of AI. Our focus should be on understanding AI as a toolset that demands a critical eye, discerning use, engaged human management, and professional refinement.
Upcoming live events… (If you are so inclined, give us your ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ assessment on conferences you attend, and we will too- these will be used in aggregate and anonymously.) PLEASE NOTE: A recent executive order applies to federal employee travel, directing government agencies to prohibit travel without written approved justification for the trip, including conferences and other non-essential purposes. WE RECOMMEND YOU CONFIRM WITH CONFERENCE MANAGEMENT THAT THE “SHOW WILL GO ON” BEFORE MAKING PLANS.

From The Veteran Professional
Last chance to sign up for an upcoming webinar. Tonight (so this is your last chance), we will be hosting a webinar with Bobby Payne, Senior Vice President for Veteran Strategy at Shift Group. He is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant and a super stellar dude (he’s a drummer in a rock band). When is it? Mar 26, 2025 07:00 PM EST What is the webinar about? Bobby was recently on the podcast (listen here) and I also wanted to give you all the chance to speak with him directly and ask any questions you might have. What do they do? Shift Group is a recruitment firm. But they have a VERY different strategy and take than your average military hiring company. First, they take you through a self-guided course. If you really focus, you can knock it out in three days. In that course, they help you answer a few questions: What are your personal values? What do you like to do? What are you good at? What type of work do you want to do? What type of company do you want to work for? After you complete the training module, you get paired with a coach who can work with you to help you find the best company to work for and help you get hired. What are their results? Simply speaking, the numbers speak for themselves. 2000+ Athletes and Veterans placed 400+ Hiring Partners <5% attrition (industry average is 35%) 9 months average time to promotion (2x faster than average) They have quite simply figured it out. Shift knows how to place people in new roles where they thrive and the company is happy. That’s also why their program is free for veterans. They do the work with you up front, and everyone has a better result on the back side. When is the webinar? Mar 26, 2025 07:00 PM EST. You can sign up here. This from Liz Wilson Marion: Making communication the catalyst for confident leaders and engaged, happy workplaces. There’s a flood of incredible talent on the market right now. Government layoffs have hit individuals and federal contractors hard. Every day, highly skilled professionals are sharing their resumes, along with companies that have had to make tough decisions, doing their best to support them. It’s a tough moment, but it’s also a chance for great organizations to find great people. If you’re in transition, look beyond the familiar. Small businesses, startups, and growing companies are actively looking for high-impact talent. They need people who can adapt, lead, and bring fresh perspectives—and that might be exactly where you thrive. If you’re hiring, take a few minutes to search LinkedIn for available talent. A quick keyword search can connect you with professionals ready to make an impact, for example, use “Open to Work” or “Seeking new opportunities” to find professionals actively looking. ALSO Job titles + industry keywords (e.g., “Project Manager defense industry” or “Software Engineer cloud security”) to surface candidates with the right expertise. MOST IMPORTANTLY, reach out. MLM notes: Just about everyone I know is in the same boat, so let’s paddle together! |

A few Trade Press highlights & lowlights:
BY CAMILLE TUUTTI “The Advancing Women in IT Community” aims to empower women with knowledge and skills to help them pursue successful IT careers and inspire them to choose IT as their profession. The group serves as an information resource and provides mentorship and networking opportunities. It will also develop member-driven initiatives and programs, and actively work with issues related to legislation involving women and careers. Although women have seen many breakthroughs in the workplace, “the truth is our progress has stalled in IT,” said Nancy Hammervik, CompTIA’s senior vice president of industry relations. Research by the National Center for Women & Information Technology shows that women composed 36 percent of IT professionals in 1991, but the number of technology jobs held by women has declined since, citing unconscious bias, gender pay gaps, and lack of role models as contributing factors. https://www.defenseone.com/defense-systems/2012/02/new-community-inspires-women-to-pursue-it-careers/237978/?oref=d1-next-story
The intelligence community needs to improve its career-development processes if it’s going to keep young stars BY CARTEN CORDELL, MANAGING EDITOR, GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
After long years of worrying about recruiting younger employees, the U.S. intelligence community is getting many applicants. “The quality of new talent that we are getting is phenomenal,” said Kimberly King, career service manager for analysis within the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Office of Human Resources. Former Defense Department chief information officer John Sherman said, “If your career development feels like it’s from the 1990s, it probably is. There’s career services and a lot of thoughtfulness being put across the agencies into this, but it still feels very government. And I think from a super creative generation, if they are going to experience inflexibility, yes, they’ll do the mission…but the highly laddered structure can be suffocating. More often than not, the mid-level was trying to hang on and not allow [change],” he said. “If you feel like that is happening in your agency, that will kill retention, and you will lose them because they are so talented.” DIA has been active in trying to address things like pay, representation, and using data to better understand their trends in attrition and the reason behind it. The agency is also giving workers new skills through joint duty assignments that send them to temporarily work with other agencies, embedding with private-sector partners, and in academia. The federal government’s move toward skills-based hiring focuses on technical training, certification, and competency… https://www.defenseone.com/policy/2024/09/intelligence-agencies-are-attracting-new-talent-do-they-have-career-development-systems-keep-them/399595/
A slice of…American Demographics
Some sobering statistics about mental health and related data:
About 58.7 million adults had a mental illness in 2023. That’s the equivalent of 22.8% of the adult population of the U.S, or 2 in 9 adults. This data comes from an annual survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which defines mental illness as a range of disorders, from mild to severe, affecting a person’s thinking, mood, or behavior.
- Mental illness rates vary by age group. In 2023, people who were 18–25 years old had the highest rate of mental illness at 33.8%. This was 11.0 percentage points higher than the average for all adults. In 2015, the rate for the 18-25 age group was 21.7%, which was 3.8 percentage points higher than the average.
- Utah had the country’s highest rate of mental illness at 29.19%, 6.1 percentage points greater than the national rate. New Jersey had the lowest rate at 19.38%, 3.72 percentage points less than the national average.
Related Questions:
- How many people die by suicide in the United States each year? About 49,476 people died by suicide in 2022. In other words, there were about 14.2 suicides for every 100,000 people in the United States.
- How many drug overdose deaths happen every year in the US? In 2022, there were about 107,941 overdose deaths. That means that for every 100,000 people living in the US, 32 died of a drug overdose. This is the highest the drug overdose death rate has reached since data from 1999 became available.

6.7 magnitude earthquake, 164 km WSW of Riverton, New Zealand, 2025-03-25 01:43:12 (UTC), 46.708°S 165.933°E, 21.0 km depth
- There’s no specific, ongoing, or documented US military presence in Riverton, New Zealand, but we have a history of military cooperation for training and exercises. During World War II, the US military, including the Marines, was stationed there for staging and training before operations in the Pacific. Between 15,000 and 45,000 American servicemen were in camps in New Zealand.
- Today, the US Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy regularly operate and train together in engagements such as the U.S.-led biennial Rim of the Pacific exercise and the annual Pacific Partnership disaster response preparedness mission.
- New Zealand and the United States are close strategic partners and regularly collaborate on defense and security matters.
6.2 magnitude earthquake, 120 km SSE of Burica, Panama, 2025-03-21 14:50:51 (UTC), 7.049°N 82.397°W, 10.0 km depth
- Between 1979 and 31 December 1999 U.S. transferred all military areas and constructions to Panama. Formal U.S. presence ended by 2000. In total, 95,293 acres (386 square kilometres) with 5,237 buildings were handed over.
- The United States invaded Panama in December 1989. The purpose was to depose the de facto ruler of Panama, General Manuel Noriega, who was wanted by U.S. authorities for racketeering and drug trafficking. The operation, codenamed Operation Just Cause, concluded in January 1990 with the surrender of Noriega. The Panama Defense Forces were dissolved, and President-elect Endara was sworn into office.
- Operation Just Cause involved the unprecedented use of U.S. military women during the invasion. Approximately 600 of the 26,000 members of the U.S. forces involved in the invasion were women. They did not serve direct combat roles or combat arms units, but did serve as military police, truck drivers, helicopter pilots, and in other logistical roles.

- The US Navy established a significant presence in Adak, Alaska, during World War II, but the Naval Air Facility Adak closed in 1997, and the island is now mostly abandoned.
- Adak served as a crucial base for operations against Japanese forces in the Aleutian Islands, particularly during the retaking of Attu and Kiska
- During the Cold War, the base was used as a submarine surveillance center, monitoring Soviet activity in the region.
- Only a small number of people reside on Adak, and the island has a limited economy, primarily based on fishing and tourism.
6.0 Magnitude Earthquake, South Sandwich Islands region, 2025-03-14 19:42:35 (UTC-04:00), Location 55.739°S 27.112°W, Depth 35.4 km
- Since 1908, Britain has owned the South Sandwich Islands, administered from the Falkland Islands. They make up 11 islands, with an area the size of Rhode Island.
- There is no evidence of any formal US defense involvement in the South Sandwich Islands. However, during the Falkland War in 1982 between the UK and Argentina, the US provided key diplomatic, logistical, and intelligence support, albeit covert, to the UK.
- Today, other than a station that houses scientists from the British Antarctic Survey, the islands are uninhabited due to their remoteness and lack of infrastructure.
- Unfortunately, reindeer, rats, and mice were introduced to the islands in the 18th to 20th centuries, devastating native flora and bird species. The intruders were exterminated, leading to the creation in 2012 of one of the world’s largest marine reserves.
5.8 Magnitude Earthquake, 140 km ENE of Masohi, Indonesia, 2025-03-17 13:32:17 (UTC-04:00), Location 2.872°S 130.161°E, Depth 10.0 km
- Indonesia is strategically critical to the region and has long been a key U.S. partner, including advanced fighter jets to Indonesia and enhanced joint naval exercises.
- The US and Indonesian National Armed Forces led the 2024 Super Garuda Shield joint combat exercises. More than 5,000 soldiers, approximately 2,500 US service members, are from the Indonesian, Australian, Japanese, and Singapore military.
- While promoting “free and open” Indo-Pacific security and trade with the U.S. and other democracies in the region, to China, it’s a threat, intentionally provoking conflict.
- Indonesia has partnered with the Hawaii National Guard since 2006; the State Partnership Program is a U.S.-led initiative that includes 96 partners around the globe.
