Very interesting…
Did you know that if current tobacco use patterns persist, an estimated 5.6 million of today’s youth under age 18 will eventually die prematurely from a smoking-related disease? Full disclosure: I have a very personal and passionate bias toward companies and their lobbyists, marketing cigarettes, vapes, and zin to children. So, here you go…
Earlier last week, the US Supreme Court supported the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) rejection of Big Tobacco’s claim that the FDA was unfairly restricting applications for “…more than 1 million fruit-, candy- and dessert-flavored e-cigarette liquids…popular with middle-schoolers and high-schoolers”. From the Washington Post: Supreme Court rules FDA properly rejected fruit-flavored vape liquids – Companies sued the FDA, saying the agency unfairly shifted its standards for approving e-cigarette liquids popular with teens. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the FDA properly rejected applications to market fruit- and dessert-flavored liquids for electronic cigarettes that the agency says are popular with young people and risk them getting hooked on nicotine. Recent surveys showed they were particularly popular with middle-schoolers and high schoolers. An e-cigarette or vape is a battery-powered device that heats a nicotine-infused liquid, turning it into a vapor that is inhaled. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/04/02/ecigarettes-vapes-supreme-court-case/?utm_source=alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wp_news_alert_revere&location=alert
Do the people who work for big tobacco companies know?
- Cigarette smoking during childhood and adolescence causes significant health problems among young people, including an increase in the number and severity of respiratory illnesses, decreased physical fitness, and potential effects on lung growth and function!
- Childhood is when an addiction to smoking takes hold, often lasting into and sometimes throughout adulthood!
- Among adults who have ever smoked daily, 87% had tried their first cigarette by the time they were 18 years of age, and 95% had by age 21!
- Every day, almost 2,500 children under 18 years of age try their first cigarette, and more than 400 of them will become new, regular daily smokers. 3 Half of them will ultimately die from their habit!
- People who start smoking at an early age are more likely to develop a severe addiction to nicotine than those who start at a later age. Of adolescents who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, most report that they would like to quit, but are not able to do so!
Thinking about AI…
Now that I’m a (recent) grandfather–‘Opa’, this caught my eye…
“AI for Kids” https://aiforkids.buzzsprout.com/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
(and their parents and teachers). According to their website, these are podcasts that make exploring artificial intelligence a fun and safe adventure for young learners and their families.
I checked out the following podcast and agree with their claims: “Episodes are packed with exciting stories, easy-to-understand explanations, and engaging interviews with both curious kids and leading AI experts. We break down everything from the basics of machine learning to the ethics of AI, making complex ideas simple and thrilling.” They started podcasting last year and currently have 44 episodes you and your kids can check out…

Upcoming live and virtual events… {Please give us your ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ assessment on conferences you attend, and we will too–these will be used in aggregate & anonymously. Who knows, it might result in some greatly anticipated “DefCON-1” coffee cups, lanyards, teddy bears, and caps.}
- Based on ad hoc DefCON-1 “Tomatometer”, gauging critical consensus of recent events, we received some feedback on the Avalon Airshow 2025, resulting in 80% rotten tomatoes. In March 2025, the largest air show in the southern hemisphere was an international success. However, due to the U.S. presidential executive order that now restricts American military officials’ attendance, reportedly only a dozen senior US officials and approximately 100 US companies were there, plus the F-22s and F-16s shone brightly.

No fuss, no muss…
I saw a few things on LinkedIn about professional & personal development.
Jonathan Phillips authored the book “The Fifth General Order” about his experience of being prosecuted following a devastating ambush in Iraq. In 2006, shortly after graduating from high school, 19-year-old Jonathan Phillips deployed to Iraq’s Anbar Province at one of the most volatile times in that bloody conflict.
On Jan. 20, 2007, Lance Cpl. Phillips faced a fierce nighttime ambush that launched him into a national security scandal and led to him spending 20 months in prison, half of that time in solitary confinement. But that wouldn’t be the end of his story. Phillips fought back and ultimately received an honorable discharge, battlefield distinction, and medical retirement from his combat-sustained injuries. The legal battles were only one front in his personal war. The other required years of rehabilitation and therapy, which helped him put down his story in his own words. Phillips chronicled his background, the Iraq incident, and his post-service struggles in the book, “The Fifth General Order: A Memoir of War, Resilience, and Redemption.” He recently spoke to Military Times about the process of writing the book and what he hoped it would convey… See full article in Military Times: https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2025/04/03/marine-publishes-book-to-clear-his-name-following-bloody-iraq-ambush/?utm_campaign=dfn-ebb&utm_medium=email&utm_source=sailthru
The Moment Before You Speak: A Presenting Technique People Overlook https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/moment-before-you-speak-presenting-technique-most-people-overlook-ggvie/?trackingId=XBJenAl4Se2tXJfjBeiapg%3D%3D Picture this: You’re standing in front of a room with your heart racing, and palms sweating. Your slides are ready to go. But something doesn’t feel right. Sound familiar? Many presenters focus on what they’ll say and how they’ll say it—but overlook a fundamental question that could change everything: “Why am I even presenting?” A simple shift—focusing on who you’re helping rather than how you’re performing—transforms the experience of presenting and its impact…Anxiety: Instead of trying to eliminate nervousness, channel it toward serving your audience. The key is redirecting energy toward your purpose. When you shift from “How do I look?” to “How can I help these people?” your body language naturally becomes more open. Your voice finds its authentic tone. Your content organizes itself around what matters most…Making It Practical: How do you implement this approach in your next presentation? It’s a simple pre-presentation ritual:
- Before opening, take a moment to ask: “What specific challenge does my audience face that this information could help solve?”
- Picture one person—either someone you know or an earlier version of yourself—who deeply needed this information. What would have made the biggest difference for them?
- Plan how you’ll establish common ground in the first 30 seconds. Not a joke as an opening—a real acknowledgment of shared challenges/aspirations (funny too is ok).
Beyond the Slides
- Keep slides simple and focused on what helps your audience, not what helps you remember your points.
- Practicing storytelling elements in everyday conversations. Notice what engages people naturally and brings them along your narrative journey.
- The number one way to improve your presenting skills is to watch your recordings, see what’s working, not just what needs improvement.
- The next time you’re preparing to present, try asking yourself: “Who am I really doing this for and why?” Transform both your experience and your impact.
A few Trade Press highlights & lowlights:
South Carolina Guardsman Awarded for Heroic Rescue U.S. Army Sergeant Anthony Amick, 59th Troop Command, South Carolina Army National Guard, was awarded the Medal of Valor, the state’s highest military honor, for his extraordinary bravery and selfless actions during a devastating multi-car accident. The award recognizes Sergeant Amick’s quick thinking and courageous response in rescuing multiple civilians trapped in burning vehicles at the scene.
The incident, which occurred on a busy highway, quickly escalated into a chaotic and dangerous situation. Several vehicles were involved in a collision, resulting in multiple fires and trapping occupants within the wreckage. Without hesitation, Sergeant Amick, leveraging his training as a military medical professional, rushed toward the danger. Witnesses at the scene described a scene of intense heat and rapidly spreading flames. Despite the significant risk to his own life, Sergeant Amick repeatedly entered the burning vehicles, providing immediate medical assistance and extricating trapped civilians.
His calm demeanor and decisive actions were crucial in stabilizing injured individuals until emergency services could arrive. “Sergeant Amick’s actions that day were nothing short of heroic,” said Major Dena Ogden, South Carolina National Guard deputy state training officer. “He didn’t hesitate to put himself in harm’s way to save the lives of others. He embodies the Army values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.” Maj. Karla Evans, SC National Guard & MEGHANN MYERS, STAFF REPORTER Defense One
The future is robots clearing buildings and disarming bombs, says General James Rainey, head of Army Futures Command, at the McAleese defense conference last week. Rainey said, “The real art of the deal is going to be: how do you figure out how to integrate them into formations in a way that optimizes the advantages? I’m talking about no blood through first contact…. The proper combination of humans and machines could help some of the Army’s heavy units drop weight to make them more maneuverable on a battlefield and also easier to sustain over long periods, while giving soldiers the space to solve problems and make ‘values-based’ decisions,” Rainey said. “Drones have done that in air warfare over the past 20 years,” he said, “freeing up humans from needing to scout out enemy positions and pilot aircraft to drop large, precise weapons on them.” Now the Army is looking for the thing that will lighten the load for ground combat… See full article: https://www.defenseone.com/technology/2025/03/army-wants-ai-take-physical-risk-its-soldiers/403850/?oref=d1-topic-lander-river

Drug prices have risen three times faster than the rate of inflation.
-
- Drug prices were 5.5 times higher in 2024 than in 1985, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, increases are outpacing general cost-of-living increases.
-
- The cost of medication has gone up three times as fast as the overall rate of inflation, with drugs targeting heart disease rising the fastest.
-
- Since 2002, prices for cardiovascular medications have risen more than any other drugs. A cardiovascular drug that cost $100 in 2002 cost $455 in 2025. Most treat heart disease, the most common cause of death.
-
- Heart and diabetes medications have had the largest price increases since 2002. Insulin and antidiabetic drugs have had the second-highest growth — a drug that cost $100 in 2002 cost $442 in 2025. Insulin costs reversed course in 2023, when the Inflation Reduction Act capped insulin costs for Medicare enrollees at $35 a month. From 2023 to 2025, the price of insulin dropped 16%.
How are drug prices determined? Out-of-pocket drug prices depend on whether the purchaser has insurance and, if they do, how much their plan covers. Public and private health insurance plans have covered an ever-increasing percentage of nationwide prescription drug costs — from 16% in 1970 to 68% in 2000 to 85% in 2022 — as updated legislation required many plans to increase prescription allowances and Medicare has added coverage.

Btw, these people are also doing outstanding work… The USO! Just before the onset of America’s involvement in World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sought to unite several service associations into one organization to lift the morale of our military and nourish support on the home front. Those entities – the Salvation Army, Young Men’s Christian Association, Young Women’s Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association, and the National Jewish Welfare Board – became the United Service Organizations or the USO. Today, the USO has continued to support our nation’s military and their families for over seven decades as they defend our country and its freedoms. By providing support to our servicemen and women as they perform their most challenging duties around the world, the USO credo is to be always by their side.
We are most familiar with the Mid-Atlantic area USO chapter https://midatlantic.uso.org/, where I proudly served as a USO Board Member for many years. It is supported by volunteers from across the defense and aerospace industry and community and is one of the few USO chapters that has operated continuously since 1941.
