Defense, Aerospace & Health Industry Career Opportunities & News

The ex-John F. Kennedy CV-67 embarked on its final journey in 2025, from Philadelphia, PA, to Brownsville, TX. From 1968 – 2007, CV-67 had multiple tours in the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian, Ionian, Ligurian, Aegean, and Adriatic seas. Soon to be dismantled, the dead weight is 21,927 tons. In case you were wondering, I think the average going rate for scrap steel is around $200/ton = $4,385,400. Later this year, the CVN-79 Ford-class carrier USS John F. Kennedy is expected to be commissioned. Photo By: Jay Butterbaugh

Very interesting… A few days ago, in 1979, the Three Mile Island nuclear meltdown occurred near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Three Mile Island accident was a partial nuclear meltdown of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, located on the Susquehanna River in Londonderry Township. The reactor accident began at 4:00 a.m. on March 28, 1979, and released radioactive gases and radioactive iodine into the environment. It is the worst accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant history.

The accident began with failures in the non-nuclear secondary system, followed by a stuck-open pilot-operated relief valve in the primary system, which allowed large amounts of water to escape from the pressurized isolated coolant loop. The Washington Post reported that “At about 2:00 pm, with pressure almost down to the point where the huge cooling pumps could be brought into play, a small hydrogen explosion jolted the reactor.

The investigation strongly criticized Babcock & Wilcox, Met Ed, General Public Utilities, and the NRC for lapses in quality assurance and maintenance, inadequate operator training, lack of communication of important safety information, poor management, and complacency, but avoided concluding on the future of the nuclear industry. Governor Thornburgh, on the advice of NRC chairman Joseph Hendrie, advised the evacuation “of pregnant women and pre-school age children…within a five-mile radius of Three Mile Island”. The evacuation zone was extended to a 20-mile radius on March 30. Within days, 140,000 people had left the area. More than half of the 663,500 population within the 20-mile radius remained in that area. The Three Mile Island accident was a significant turning point in the global development of nuclear power; 52 U.S. nuclear reactors were canceled between 1980 and 1984.

Until 2012, no U.S. nuclear power plant had been authorized to begin construction since the year before 1978. Cleanup started in August 1979 and officially ended in December 1993, with a total cleanup cost of about $1 billion. A peer-reviewed research article by Dr. Steven Wing found a significant increase in cancers between 1979 and 1985 among people who lived within ten miles of TMI. In 2009, Dr. Wing stated that radiation releases during the accident were probably “thousands of times greater” than the NRC’s estimates.

A retrospective study of the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry found an increased incidence of thyroid cancer in some counties south of TMI (although, notably, not in Dauphin County where the reactor was located) and in high-risk age groups. In 2020, the site was purchased by TMI-2 solutions, a subsidiary of EnergySolutions, with the intent of cleaning up the site for less money than is available in a dedicated fund. In 2023, 99% of the nuclear fuel has been cleaned up, and the site has entered the next phase of clean-up that will last until 2029. TMI-2 plans to finish the cleanup and demolish the plant by 2052.

In September 2024, Constellation Energy announced plans to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant to sell to Microsoft, demonstrating the immense power needs of the tech sector as they build data centers to support AI. Constellation expects the reactor at Three Mile Island to come back online in 2028, if approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Constellation also plans to apply to extend the plant’s operations to at least 2054.

Thinking about AI…

A colleague of mine used an AI app builder and made a simple product to develop a newsletter about investing. You can see a demo of it here. “If you are wondering, I cannot write a single line of code. This was all done with AI. If you want to try it, just think of something interesting and cool and try to build it. You can use a product called Databutton. It worked very well and easily.” They use a reasoning agent; it is the first to ever learn and know about your app, share your app brief as a vision, specs, and design inspiration to get started. “Databutton has long-term memory about your app and decisions made along the way. You create high-level plans and get an instant development plan, broken down into clear, actionable tasks. The plan evolves as you continue giving feedback and have new ideas or needs. Create a landing page recommended and build landing page for the CRM in a bold, clean style. Implement sign in with Google to add secure login with Firebase. Build the pipeline view to create a pipeline view using the Airtable API and execute big tasks. Just hit “start task”. The agent will think, research, code, and let you know when it needs input. I’ve started developing the sign-in with Google. Implement sign-in progress to sign in with Google. The agent handles deployment and makes tech decisions like which database or product analytics to use, but you can always override. Stop commanding and start collaborating. You can deploy to your domain in seconds. Deployment, including to your domain, is a breeze. The Databutton agent deploys your app to AWS and Google Cloud. Apps live on scalable infrastructure and have snappy load times.”

Upcoming live and virtual events… (If you are inclined, give us your ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ assessment on conferences you attend, and we will too- these will be used in aggregate and anonymously.) PLEASE NOTE: A recent executive order applies to federal employee travel, directing government agencies to prohibit travel without written approved justification for the trip, including conferences and other non-essential purposes. WE RECOMMEND YOU CONFIRM WITH CONFERENCE MANAGEMENT THAT THE “SHOW WILL GO ON” BEFORE MAKING PLANS.

I saw a few things on LinkedIn…

The sooner you discuss salary in your job interview, the better. Jasmine McCall learned this when she successfully negotiated a $54,000 sign-on bonus at Amazon, on top of a six-figure salary and $100,000 in stock options. They initially pushed back, but because McCall knew how to quantify her value, she was able to show them how much they would lose if she walked away. Two days later, they told her they found the budget to give her the $54,000 she had asked for. Today, McCall runs a business called PayBump where she teaches people how to land high-paying jobs and build financial security through negotiation. Cardinal rules for a successful negotiation:  cnb.cx/4kECm9R

  1. Salary negotiation starts before the offer…
  2. Negotiate more than just salary…
  3. Know what your counterparts are earning…
  4. Negotiate from a place of strength, not desperation…
  5. Be willing to walk away….

By Jacob Morgan “Fail fast, fail often”the oft-repeated slogan, popular in Silicon Valley and elsewhere – is useful for helping people become less risk averse and more willing to innovate.  And it is indeed good advice— in certain situations.  It’s very bad advice in many others, perhaps even most others. A simple point about context comes to life in a thought experiment: Imagine yourself saying ‘fail fast, fail often’ to an entrepreneur, or perhaps to a scientist. No disconnect there. They will smile and say, “I get it.”  But say ‘fail fast, fail often’ to the manager of an automotive assembly line – or a surgeon in an operating room – and they will respond, rightly, ‘Are you kidding me?’ The advice is beyond unhelpful. In what kinds of situations does ‘fail fast, fail often’ make sense?

First, and most important, they should be novel situations where the only way to make progress is through trial and failure. When coming up with a plausible idea and testing it out to see what happens is your only option for making progress, then fail fast (and learn fast) is good advice.  In other words, when there is no playbook to follow, you must accept the reality that the path toward success will entail failure along the way.

Second, without a worthy goal – a motivating reason to endure the risk of failing – setting out on a path that will entail failure may not be such a smart idea.  Relatedly, it’s important to take a thoughtful approach to experimenting. Even in a novel situation, taking the time to formulate a hypothesis about what might work is smart, and it lowers the risk of preventable failure. It comes down to this: realistically accepting the risk of failure to make progress in new territory is not the same as deliberately setting out to fail. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/dr-amy-edmondson-harvard-professor-best-selling-author-jacob-morgan-7rzhc/

A few Trade Press highlights & lowlights:

The First Black Firefighters.  The earliest documents identifying government-sanctioned Black firefighters in the U.S. come from New Orleans in the year 1817. Up north, one of the first Black firefighters in U.S. history is Molly Williams. Williams was an enslaved Black woman who lived in New York city during the early decades of the 19th century and worked alongside the men of the Oceanus Volunteer Fire Company No. 1. Patrick H. Raymond served as Chief Engineer of the Cambridge, Massachusetts Fire Department from 1871 to 1879, making him the first known Black Fire Chief in the U.S. Born in 1831, Raymond was the son of man who had escaped slavery in Virginia and he commanded the Cambridge Fire Department when it responded to the Great Fire of Boston in 1872. One of the most iconic traditions in firefighting, that of the fireman’s pole, has its roots in the history of Black firefighters. In 1878, the Company 21 Fire Station was established as the first Black fire company in the Chicago Fire Department.

Black firefighter George Reid reacted to an alarm by sliding from the third floor to the first floor using a pole that had been temporarily lashed in place to hoist hay bales for the company’s horses. In 1880, the Boston Fire Department installed a brass pole, the type still used today. At the time, Black firefighters were met with hostility. Jim Crow-like conditions existed in firehouses across the country, and Black firefighters in newly integrated companies were subject to cruelty and violence at the hands of their colleagues. In opposition to the racial injustices they faced, Black firefighters began to form fraternal organizations to advocate for themselves.

Today, the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters represents more than 8,000 fire service personnel with 180 active chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Rosemary Cloud made history in April 2002 when she was named Fire Chief for the Atlanta suburb of East Point. The efforts of these Black pioneers in the field of disaster response represent a legitimate push from disenfranchised men and women who desired to assume a basic civic function – to defend their homes and families. The legacy of Black firefighters demonstrates how in civil service and strive to create a community where all can be empowered to serve. https://teamrubiconusa.org/news-and-stories/a-legacy-of-courage-under-fire/

The US Space Force has given the thumbs up for two new launch firms, Rocket Lab USA and Stoke Space, to compete for future contracts worth up to $5.6 billion over the next five years, Space Systems Command (SSC) announced Thursday. Both companies were awarded indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contracts under the service’s National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1. They join Blue Origin, SpaceX, and United Launch Alliance (ULA), which were added to the pool of competitors last June [PDF].

In addition, Rocket Lab and Stoke each received a $5 million task order “to conduct an initial capabilities assessment and develop their approach to tailored mission assurance,” SSC said. “Tailored mission assurance is a tiered approach to the government’s breadth and depth of the launch vehicle baseline understanding and the associated risks to the mission.” NSSL Phase 3 Lane 1 covers launches to easier to reach orbits, payloads with less mass, and missions that are not absolute must-gos.

Lt. Col. Douglas Downs, SSC’s materiel leader for its Space Launch Procurement unit, said that SSC also has in the works “several more missions” that will be competed in fiscal 2026. All totaled, the Space Force currently envisions about 30 launches under NSSL Phase 3 Lane 1 through June 2029. Rocket Lab’s Neutron medium-lift rocket is scheduled to make its debut launch from the firm’s new Launch Complex 3 in Wallops Island, Va., sometime in the second half of this year.
